ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATION: The figure depicted is striking the ground to summon the worms and get them into an excited state in preparation for battle If you have seen the movie (or read the book) "Dune," it might be similar to how the Fremen desert people summon the giant sand worms which they ride. The summoner is not necessarily virtuous nor evil, but, like all of us, has the potential to be either.
Anson told me that while creating this illustration he had hoped to elicit a subconscious reminder of the quintessential American dessert; apple pie, with the worms just beneath the pastry "crust" of the Earth. This may very well be the source of uneasiness the viewer feels while experiencing the artwork. Obviously, the juxtaposition of a sweet, tempting treat against the horrific writhing of a snarl of monstrous worms would be repulsive to any normal person. He said, "I imagined a deep, thundering drum beat with a wet crackling sound in the background, like wet noodles being stirred."
