"Fallen Ideal" was created for Wizards of the Coast's collectible card game, Magic the Gathering. It was published in Time Spiral Expansion in October 2006.
By this time, all of the newly contracted artwork appearing in Magic products was heavily art directed and this piece was no exception. Anson's initial pencil concept sketch for this illustration (separately available) includes a hand-scribed indication of his reticence about the artwork. Nonetheless, well-executed by one of the games original 25 artists, this painting's value as a collectible piece of Magic's history is inarguable.
From a gaming perspective, this card served as an 'improved' version of Fallen Angel, with a lesser casting cost and the ability to be returned from the graveyard into the player's hand at end of turn.
